Sea-Watch e.V. is a non-profit initiative dedicated to the civil sea rescue of people on the move. In view of the humanitarian disaster in the central Mediterranean Sea-Watch provides emergency aid, demands and at the same time forces the rescue by the responsible European institutions and publicly stands up for legal escape routes. We are politically and religiously independent and are financed exclusively by donations.

For our department Operational Coordination we are looking for a position as Search and Rescue Coordinator (f/m/d) with 40 hours per week from July 2025 onwards. Ther position is initially limited to 12 months with the wish to extend.

In this position you will be primarily focused on Aurora, though also supporting Sea-Watch 5 as a focal point on land to ensure smooth operations and you work on operational/strategical topics in Sea-Watch in general.

We are looking for someone with substantial SAR (search and rescue) experience (preferably also on a rescue boat), great teamwork & leadership skills, resilience and a strong will to keep pushing against Fortress Europe. We offer you a strong and supportive team which will help you and share tasks, and a a highly motivated organisational environment.

 

Your tasks:

Your primary focus will be covering shifts as a lead SARCO when the ships are operational:

  • Organizing operational briefings and debriefings with relevant parties for every rotation
  • Briefing of Head of Missions for every rotation
  • Advising the Head of Mission operatively and functioning as the focal point for the ship during mission
  • Liaising with relevant Sea-Watch departments on operational topics
  • Facilitating mission relevant meetings and information exchanges

There are additional general back-office responsibilities which may include:

  • Liaising with relevant Sea-Watch departments on long term operational topics.
  • Writing and/or reviewing relevant standard operational procedures and incorporate learnings, coming from debriefs or elsewhere
  • Updating and improve training schemes
  • Facilitating non-mission relevant meetings and information exchanges
  • Representing Sea-Watch operations in meetings with other organizations

 

Your profile:

  • Proven track record of comparable SAR experience, preferably as part of on the rescue team
  • Resilience in a constantly developing field to reach good decisions and positive outcomes with different teams (including volunteers), groups and departments
  • Ability to coordinate different teams, groups and departments simultaneously especially in stressful situations
  • Ability to prioritize, organize and delegate
  • Well informed about the latest developments in the central Mediterranean, Libya and Tunisia, developments in Italy and on EU level
  • High degree of initiative and flexibility (also in the evening/weekend)
  • Ability and willingness to travel regularly (approx. 5 times a year, mainly to Italy and Germany) to meetings or ships
  • Clear and effective communication skills
  • Excellent English language skills
  • Identification with and good knowledge of the vision and goals of Sea-Watch e.V.
