About us

Sea-Watch e.V. is a non-profit initiative dedicated to the civil sea rescue of peole on the move. In view of the humanitarian disaster in the central Mediterranean Sea-Watch provides emergency aid, demands and at the same time forces the rescue by the responsible European institutions and publicly stands up for legal escape routes. We are politically and religiously independent and are financed exclusively by donations.

For our department Medical and Humanitarian Department we are looking for a Medical Coordination (f/m/d) with 20hours per week, preferably in Berlin or in a home office. The position is initially limited to 12 months as maternity cover. This position is aimed at professionals with a background in medicine or health management. The coordination of the department will be shared with experienced coordinators who will introduce you to the job.

The Medical and Humanitarian Department is one of the operational departments within SW. Our central task is creating, maintaining and evolving the best practice medical and humanitarian work on our ships, to directly benefit our guests.To achieve this, there are several people in our department that took on a coordinating role, such as our medical coordinators, the guestcare coordinator and a humanitarian protection coordinator. A the moment there are 5 employed positions and currently around 25 volunteers.

In this job, you will be focused on the more medical side of our department, without losing the focus on the humanitarian part as well. You will work closely together with the other team members within our department, as well as with other departments and volunteers.
You are responsible, together with the other medical coordinators, for the medical side of the different projects within SW. This can go from creating SOPs and guidelines to supporting the crew on board during a rotation (see also tasks).

Your profile

  • Professional medical background (e.g. in nursing, as a paramedic, in public health or as a medical doctor)
  • Good English language skills (both written and spoken)
  • Management and team coordination experience
  • Availability to travel to our ships and team meetings if necessary
  • This job can be done next to a part time job at a hospital or in a different organization

Desirable skills

  • Experience in sea rescue operations
  • Working experience with NGOs (paid or as a volunteer)
  • Additional language skills (e.g. Italian, French or German)

Your tasks

  • Ensure the rotation readiness of our rescue ships with regards to medical topics
  • Serve as a contact person for individual ship missions. Accompanying the mission from shore, supporting in technical and administrative matters
  • Consultation with the medical crewing on questions of team composition
  • Pre-rotation briefings of the (volunteer) medical crews
  • Development of medical and operational SOPs and guidelines
  • Dealing with the numerous implications COVID has on the work of Sea-Watch
  • Coordination of volunteer work within the Medical and Humanitarian department
  • Being open for new project ideas in an ever changing operational context
