Crew that arrived only yesterday had a huge operation today.
A wooden yacht with more than 120 people on board capsized in the cliffs near Palios, Lesbos. At arrival we found 4 people already in the water close to drowning, 2 children and 2 adults. After rescuing them safely onto our RHIB we moved on to the sinking boat: “The ship was full with about 120 people. We filled up our speed boat with as much people we could take. The site is very remote, that was why our phone was not working properly, we did not have any reception so we could not reach Greek Coastguard our other NGOs. We then called our own team that had just got back from its night shift because we could not handle it on our own. After one hour finally help arrived. By then we had already brought most of the people safely to shore.” states crew member Reinier Boeren.
Everyone is safe.
Maritime rescue deserves priority! It must not be responsibility of private organizations.
