Sea-Watch e.V. is a non-profit initiative dedicated to the civil sea rescue of people on the move. In view of the humanitarian disaster in the central Mediterranean Sea-Watch provides emergency aid, demands and at the same time forces the rescue by the responsible European institutions and publicly stands up for legal escape routes. We are politically and religiously independent and are financed exclusively by donations.

 

For Team Italy, we are seeking a Legal Officer with a weekly workload of 20 hours, working from home (with the option to travel). The position is initially limited to 12 months, with the possibility of an extension.

 

Your responsibilities:

  • Provide timely strategic guidance for the missions of SW ships, facilitating official communications with relevant authorities and collectively addressing potential issues that may arise during operations.
  • Deliver comprehensive briefings to mission crews on their operations’ legal and political aspects.
  • Supporting the team in regularly reviewing and updating Legal-Ops Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • ⁠Contribute to developing strategic frameworks to enhance mission effectiveness and tackle obstacles.
  • Assisting in conducting risk assessments for given scenarios, identifying potential legal challenges and mitigation strategies.
  • Facilitating an ongoing and effective dialogue on open proceedings, strategic inquiries, and so forth with lawyers / law firms that assist the organisation.
  • Collaborate with the media team to ensure that all public statements and materials align with the organisation’s values.
  • Monitor domestic and global policy-making activities, compiling summaries and updates on SAR-related developments for internal reference.
  • Participating in meetings with external key stakeholders to discuss operational trends, share experiences, and exchange best practices.
  • Assist in the development and upkeep of solidarity networks with essential stakeholders, while also promoting the organisation of collaborative events and initiatives.

Your profile:

  • Outstanding communication and interpersonal abilities.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in written and verbal English and Italian.
  •  Robust analytical and problem-solving capabilities to evaluate issues, pinpoint solutions, and formulate strategies.
  • Knowledge of relevant laws, regulations, and policies concerning the organisation’s operational focus areas is advantageous.
  • Ability to collaborate and contribute effectively within cross-functional teams and with key stakeholders
  • Strong organisational and time management skills to handle multiple projects and meet deadlines.
  • A profound passion for social justice, coupled with a commitment to the organisation’s mission and values.
