We asked 4 questions to the current crew of the Sea-Watch 4.
Lucrezia is on board as guest coordinator. While the ship is not able to sail, she is helping to keep the ship maintained so it can go back into operation as soon as possible.
Why are you on board of the Sea-Watch 4?
If Europe is not willing to rescue people, we need to step in. Because what other choice do we have?
What are you doing on board?
I am helping on deck where I can. From derusting, to fixing stuff or painting the ship… So we can make sure that the ship is in an even better shape once it will go back into operation in the central Mediterranean.
What kind of symbol is the Sea-Watch 4 for you?
Sea-Watch 4 is a symbol of hope and the values we want to represent in our lives. As European citizens we have actually learned that everyone should have the right to a dignified life. As these values become more and more meaningless for the EU, the ship gives us hope for a kind of Europe where everyone has the right to live.
What are you hoping for in the future?
Rescue itself is not enough. What we need to build is a society where we don’t only rescue people but also give these people a fair chance and the right to live.
