The official number of dead and missing in the Mediterranean, according to IOM, is now over 30,000 – a figure that marks the past, present, and future. A figure that is more symbol than fact – because many more people have lost their lives to Europe’s isolationist policy. The number of unreported cases lies at the bottom of the sea. Deaths and missing persons have only been recorded since 2014. Since 2015, we have been fighting for an end to letting people die, against deliberate murder, against politically calculated forgetting.
We mourn all the people who Fortress Europe murdered. Our thoughts are with their loved ones and our solidarity with all those who continue to risk everything in the hope of a life of safety and freedom.
The European Union must act. The deaths must be stopped. We demand legal and safe passage and freedom of movement for all!
