We ask 3 questions to the shipyard crew of the Sea-Watch 3.
Emjay is on board as an electrician. Because the EU lets people die at sea, he helps to get the ship ready for its next mission.
What is currently happening on board the Sea-Watch 3?
After the politically motivated port state control by the Italian authorities, the ship is currently prepared to go on its next mission. We take care of alleged deficiencies, which no one would have ever complained about on a merchant ship. A sad example, how the Italian authorities doing their very best to prevent civil sea rescue – even though we are doing the job they are supposed to do.
What is your favorite place here on the ship?
My favourite place is our monkey island. The highest deck of the ship where radios, antennas, radars, and searchlights are located. With the sea in the background, you can have a good overview of everything happening in the harbor…
What is your message to our society?
It’s not acceptable that the responsibility for sea rescue is dumped on the shoulders of civil society. Through decades of exploitation, Europe is destroying livelihoods in other parts of the world and creates causes of flight. Instead of putting an end to exploitation, the EU lets people die while fleeing. Our society has to stop to look away and realise that the system in which we live contributes massively to the suffering of others.
