Sea-Watch e.V. is a non-profit initiative dedicated to the civil sea rescue of people on the move. In view of the humanitarian disaster in the central Mediterranean Sea-Watch provides emergency aid, demands and at the same time forces the rescue by the responsible European institutions and publicly stands up for legal escape routes. We are politically and religiously independent and are financed exclusively by donations.

Italy Communication Officer (w/m/d)

Team Italy currently consists of 7 people who support Sea-Watch operations in Italy. We aim to provide Sea-Watch operational, legal, advocacy, and media support in Italy. The Communication Officer works closely with the organisation’s Airborne Department. The Airborne Department conducts monitoring operations over the Central Med to report and document what happens to people in distress at sea.

For our Team Italy, we are looking for an Italy-Airborne Communication Officer (f/m/d) with 20 hours per week in home office. The position is initially limited to 12 months with wish to extend.

As the Italy-Airborne Communication Officer, you are responsible for closely monitoring the progress of Airborne missions and collecting and documenting all relevant data. This information is then reported to Team Italy, ensuring they are fully informed of developments and findings. Furthermore, you are tasked with preparing and organising this data for media and advocacy purposes. Crucially, you maintain a constant flow of communication between the Airborne Department and Team Italy, keeping both parties updated on the latest activities, progress, and any pertinent issues or concerns.

Your tasks:

  • Follow the organisation’s Airborne operations so the Italian team can be updated and involved where necessary.
  • Coordinate with the Media Airborne Officers and the Italian media team to organise public communication (e.g.: prepare tweets, IG posts and press releases for the organisation’s Italian channels).
  • Support the Italian press office (mainly regarding Airborne Operations)
  • Accompany journalists and content creators on board the organisation’s aircraft during operations.
  • Participate in Team Italy’s and the Airborne Department’s weekly meetings and update each team on the other’s activities.
  • Monitor and analyse operational and political events in the Central Mediterranean and Italy to provide input and analysis.

Required skills and profile:

  • Solid knowledge and experience in working to protect the rights of migrants along European borders.
  • Knowledge of the functioning of social media and press office work.
  • Basic video editing skills and the use of Premiere Pro are appreciated.
  • Excellent knowledge of English and Italian. Knowledge of German is appreciated.
  • Willingness to delve into the Central Mediterranean’s political context and communicate this to the public.
  • Willingness to represent air operations in press interviews and public events.
  • Willingness to work flexibly, possibly even on weekends or evenings if necessary.
  • Willingness to participate in aerial operations regularly (approximately two deployments per year).
  • Willingness to travel regularly to Berlin and Lampedusa and to participate in the two annual team meetings in the presence of the Italian team.
  • Identification with and good knowledge of the vision and goals of Sea-Watch e.V.

For residence in Italy, it would be a monthly gross salary of 1.360 euros for 20 hours per week, plus a 13th and 14th monthly salary + TRF under a CCNL Confcommercio Terziario contract)
