About Sea-Watch

Sea-Watch e.V. is a non-profit initiative dedicated to the civil sea rescue of people on the move. In view of the humanitarian disaster in the central Mediterranean Sea-Watch provides emergency aid, demands and at the same time forces the rescue by the responsible European institutions and publicly stands up for legal escape routes. We are politically and religiously independent and are financed exclusively by donations.

 

For our SEA-WATCH 5 we are looking for a Deck Rating (watchkeeping) to join our mission, starting ~15.10.

The Deck Rating (watchkeeping) will take responsibility for many different aspects of operating Sea-Watch 5. You will work closely with the bosun and support them with maintenance work, ships cleaning and mooring operations. Additionally you will instruct other crewmembers on deck according to Sea-Watch principles and guidelines, promoting a safe and healthy work place where all people feel welcome. With your nautical experience you make sure that everything runs smooth and safe both during standard ship- as well as rescue operations. After rescues your duties will include care for survivors and crowd management as directed by the bosun and guest care coordinator.

Your Profile:

  • Certificate of Proficiency for ‘ratings forming part of a navigational watch’ (STCW A-II/4)
  • Valid Certificate of Proficiency Basic Safety Training (STCW A-VI/1)
  • Certificate of Proficiency in Security Awareness (STCW A-VI/6; can be obtained on short term by an online course)
  • Valid medical fitness certificate for seafarers (can be obtained short term)
  • Experience with mooring ships over 50m
  • Ability to assist in navigational watches and manual steering as per watch officers order
  • Experience with operating hydraulic cranes
  • Ability and experience with training and managing a small team
  • Excellent decision-making skills
  • Good English language skills
  • Ability to work and live in a diverse team of 30 crew members, some of whom have limited nautical experience
  • A tolerant, relaxed attitude and good social skills
  • Physical fitness and mental resilience
  • Huge interest in Guest Care (cooking, deckwatches, spending time) once we performed rescues
  • Commitment to challenging racism, sexism and the EU border policy

Desired Skills:

  • SAR experience or previous work experience with people on the move
  • Experience with crowd management
  • Professional technical training / Experience with engine/RHIB maintenance
  • Experience in operating and working with heavy hydraulic equipment such as cranes, davits, winches and A frames is desired but not essential. On the job training will be given.
  • French, arabic and italian language skills are a plus

  • Salary: 3400 €/month (employee gross)*
