Sea-Watch is looking for Project Engineer (f/m/d)

40h/ week, remote, Berlin – immediately


Sea-Watch e.V. is a non-profit initiative dedicated to the civil sea rescue of refugees. Given the humanitarian disaster in the central Mediterranean Sea-Watch provides emergency aid, demands, and at the same time, forces the rescue by the responsible European institutions and publicly stands up for legal escape routes. We are politically and religiously independent and are financed exclusively by donations.


Project Engineer (f/m/d)


Sea-Watch will add a new vessel to the fleet and we are looking for a Project Engineer (f/m/d) with 40 hours per week to support this project. Together with a dedicated team the Project Engineer (f/m/d) is responsible for all technical aspects of the purchase, mobilization shipyard period and a respective review. In this role you  will work together with an overall Project Manager during the whole process. The position is limited to 12 months; an extension will be evaluated during the project. There is also an open opportunity to develop this role further into a Technical Superintendent position within our Shipmanagement & Logistics Department.

Your responsibilities:

  • You manage the research, inspection and purchase of a suitable vessel considering all relevant technical aspects, with involvement of relevant experts and respective feedbacks
  • You coordinate the technical mobilization phase into service by focusing on technical adjustments in shipyard, purchasing and commissioning of equipment and respective engineering packages to fulfill e.g  class & flag approval in close collaboration with your project team and volunteers
  • You make sure that necessary trainings are conducted during the mobilization phase and job specifications are being created and identify job specific risks and consequences for other systems and crew well being
  • You ensure adequate documentation is available for the operation of the vessel including written procedures
  • You coordinate the testing phase, including first sea trials and SAR-missions, to analyse the technical performance of the vessel and follow-up on respective technical fine-tuning and necessary adjustments
  • You ensure the overall Technical Management of the project while defining the work scope, working structures on site and respective timelines with all internal and external parties involved and documentation management
  • You will closely work together with a Project Manager to prepare and adjust the scope of the project and related technical modifications
  • In your role, you will coordinate the technical preparation in all phases until the end of the project. You will work together with a dedicated project team and our departments like Crewing and Shipmanagement & Logistics to meet all requirements

Your profile:

  • You own a formal training as an Engineer, preferably marine engineering, and good technical knowledge
  • You have several years of professional working experience in ship management/shipping industry leading technical projects and/or project goups
  • You have strong communication and organisational skills and you are characterised by a structured and self-organized way of working with a hands-on mentality
  • You have the ability to work in a multitasking environment and quick-changing contexts
  • You are patient and reflective and at the same time flexible for ad-hoc decision making and reactiveness
  • You have experience and/or understanding of the tasks that civilian SAR vessels undertake
  • You own knowledge of international maritime law, in particular in the field of ship registration and classification
  • You have the flexibility to travel and be present during the shipyard phase
  • You own proficient knowledge of MS-Office and have no fear of modern IT devices
  • You have an understanding and openess of working in flat-hierachical and agile contexts
  • You are fluent in English (written and spoken)
  • Ideally you have experience in dealing with volunteers
