It is European governments themselves who repeatedly caused unacceptably long waiting times for disembarkation of rescued people. It is beyond cynical to use the safety of rescued persons as an argument to hinder their rescue.\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>“\u003Cem>Our ship is ready and highly equipped to render assistance to people in distress, but we are no floating hotel\u003C\u002Fem>”, says Johannes Bayer, chairman of Sea-Watch. “\u003Cem>Our duty, as of any other vessel, is to rescue people in maritime distress and to bring them to a place of safety as fast as possible. With our ship, such a place can be reached in a short time from any position on the Mediterranean, and that is what we are equipped for. It was the European governments who repeatedly delayed the disembarkation of rescued people for far too long, not us. The last inspection concluded that the Sea-Watch 3 complies with, and even exceeds, all applicable laws and regulations. “\u003Cem>It is more than obvious that the aim of this inspection is not to ensure the safety of rescued people but to find a reason to shut down one of the last and most effective rescue assets at sea\u003C\u002Fem>”, says Bayer.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>“\u003Cem>A member of the Dutch coalition government party CDA, Madeleine van Toorenburg, has made this intention very explicit when she urged for the Sea-Watch 3 to be confiscated, and took it another step further when she publicly stated a call to sink our ship. This clearly demonstrates the precarious position Sea-Watch is being put in.
